Starting January 1, 2027, the United States Federal Education Tax Credit allows you to support K–12 education in public and private schools. You make a contribution to fund scholarships and educational programs and receive the same amount back as a credit on your federal taxes, up to $1,700 each year.

Beginning January 1, 2027, you can donate to a qualified Scholarship Granting Organization (SGO) and receive a dollar-for-dollar federal tax credit of up to $1,700.
That means a $1,000 qualifying donation can reduce your federal tax bill by $1,000.
Your contribution helps more families afford Jewish day school and supports scholarships for disability accommodations. These scholarships can help both current day school families and families who want to choose Jewish day school in the future.
A Scholarship Granting Organization (SGO) provides scholarships to eligible K–12 students through their schools. Each SGO determines which schools it serves, which may include public, private, and religious schools, and distributes scholarship funds based on applications from eligible families.
Under federal law, qualifying SGOs must use at least 90% of their income from tax-credit donations to fund scholarships.
No. The federal education tax credit does not take money out of any federal, state, or local public school budget. No funding already allocated to public schools is redirected through this program.
Instead, you get to decide where up to $1,700 of your money goes, rather than giving that amount to the federal government for them to decide how to spend it. You can contribute it to a qualifying Scholarship Granting Organization, choose the school you want to support, and receive the same amount back as a credit against your federal taxes.
The federal program can support students in public, private, and religious schools. The Opportunity Fund for Jewish Education specifically supports eligible students attending or planning to attend Jewish day schools.
Any U.S. taxpayer can contribute to The Opportunity Fund for Jewish Education. You can contribute whether or not you live in a state that has opted into the federal program. You can contribute if you are abroad as long as you pay federal income taxes.
Yes. You do not need to have children, have children in Jewish day school, or have a personal connection to a Jewish day school to contribute.
You can choose to support Jewish education by donating to a specific Jewish day school or community.
Yes. You may designate your contribution to a specific Jewish day school, which will support eligible families at that school. However, federal law does not allow contributions to be designated for a specific student or family.
No. You can contribute and receive the federal tax credit regardless of whether your state has opted into the program.
A Governor’s decision determines whether eligible students in that state can receive scholarships, not whether taxpayers in that state can contribute.

Yes. Your child does not need to already attend a Jewish day school to be eligible. Families planning to enroll a child in a Jewish day school for the upcoming academic year can apply for a scholarship if they meet the other eligibility requirements.
Yes. If you have more than one child and meet the eligibility requirements, you can apply for a scholarship for each eligible child.
A final list of states that have opted in will be available on January 1, 2027.
Schools must meet all federal requirements, and students must live in a state where the Governor has opted into the federal program in order to receive scholarships.
Eligible full-time K–12 Jewish day schools are encouraged to register. Schools affiliated with Prizmah, Torah Umesorah, Teach Coalition, and/or Agudath Israel will have a streamlined path to participation, while unaffiliated schools will be guided through the Fund’s onboarding process. Yes. A school can only participate and receive scholarship funds for eligible students if it is located in a state where the Governor has opted into the federal program. Governors have until December 31, 2026 to opt in.
Applications will open on January 1, 2027 for scholarships for the 2027–2028 academic year.
